Panellus stipticus

I wanted to use my evolving plasma art skills to embody the ethereal beauty of bioluminescent lifeforms – in this case, the bitter oyster mushroom (Panellus stipticus). This piece is a fused glass plasma panel using Bullseye Glass, electrodes in the back of the panel, and a scientific label on the front of the panel that is 3d printed using PLA filament. I created multiple layers of glass powder screen prints between two different glass panels to create multiple layers of shading, especially for the mushroom gills. The glass is kiln carved to form an internal cavity, which I filled with a light blend of neon and krypton gasses to create a tranquil, ambient glow. To enhance the effect and depict the green glow that the bitter oyster mushroom can emit, I hand painted the mushroom gills with phosphors, which emit a vivid green glow when the piece is illuminated.
