Koi (Cyprinus rubrofuscus)

7 x 23 x 7    Hot blown and sculpted Koi fish, but made using both kiln-fusing and traditional hot shop glass blowing techniques. Traditional Italian techniques were used to pull the murine used to make the scale pattern, and then a large glass panel containing all of the patterning was composed and fused into one piece. I then returned to the hot shop to roll-up and hot-sculpt the piece into the finished koi. My inspiration for this piece comes from the Japanese "Koinobori," or silk carp-streamer kite used throughout Japan to celebrate Children's day (Kodomo no Hi) - I placed a kite in the backdrop of one of the photos of my piece for reference.
